Fiction imitates reality. Or other way around?

   Is Tucci the Right Man?
In A Modern Affair a professional woman played by Lisa Eichhorn hears her biological clock ticking. She decides to resort to a sperm bank as she has not found Mr. Right. Becomes obsessed with the donor. Meets the donor. A very charming Stanley Tucci who is unaware that the woman he just met ... is carrying his baby!

Here's another plot. A woman finds her self in the same situation, in Boston. She acquires a sperm sample and makes an appointment for insemination. But she meets a very charming man BEFORE she  has time to use the sample. Sample 8282. She passes the sperm sample to a woman who's also single and desperate for a baby. She in turn immediately meets a man and finds herself without the need of the donated sperm. 8282, clearly a lucky number. She passes it on to the next woman in line. Who, you've guessed it, also meets a man. A bit contrived of a plot, isn't it? Except that it all happened in real life, as told in the book Three Wishes.

Modern methods of procreation, as well as the unusual ways of meeting a partner they can lead to, were topical when A Modern Affair was made. And still are today. Witness the flurry of movies on the subject being produced this year. We mentioned The Backup Plan. Next one out will be The Switch - formerly knows as The Baster (don't ask)(trust me). This time the sample from the donors gets switched around. Hence the title. Obviously.

To tell you the truth, I'm a bit fed up with all these artificial insemination stories. Enough already! Maybe whne A Modern Affair came out it was really a new way to look at things, but in 2010 it's getting old. I feel ready for a good old adoption story. Or a child conceived the old fashion way, wihci is not so bad after all!

There are plenty of stories about or that involve adoption and normal pregnancy that are out today and popular. More movies include them because it's a part of every day life. Just look at Juno (which was about both regular conception and adoption!). There's also natural pregnancy and adoption in Sex and the City, a big section of The Time Traveler's Wife focuses on Claire (Rachel McAdams) repeatedly trying to have a natural born child without miscarrying, and let's not forget the recent popular horror movie Orphan.

I think the artificial insemination stories are becoming popular because it's something new and interesting, and people are getting ideas to put their own spin on it. I don't think there's anything wrong with the slough of recent artificial insemination stories. I think it just shows that it is topical, and even that it's becoming trendy.

It's an interesting subject and I hope to see more movies about it in the future.

But don't you think the subject is getting kind of tired? Most of the movies involving natural pregnancy or adoption, those things are just a piece of the storyline. These artificial insemination stories all revolve around the artificial insemination itself. How many more interesting things can really happen with it?

These films have actually really inspired me to look into artificial insemination for myself! As a young woman who recently discovered she was infertile, seeing many of these films has really opened my eyes to this option!
